Geometry Scripting in ANSYS SpaceClaim for Rapid Model Changes

Geometry scripting, macros and batch files are great ways to automate repetitive tasks or reduce a complicated workflow to a single mouse click. Although you may have never written or recorded your own script, there’s a good chance you’ve benefited from one created by someone else.

ANSYS SpaceClaim recently introduced a geometry scripting environment that further eases common geometry related tasks. More specifically, it’s a simple way to record or write a set of commands that will automate repetitive tasks or make complicated workflows easy. It also serves as a method of extending the user interface to make otherwise impossible geometry by expanding the different things you can do with geometry. From replaying recorded changes on imported models to parameterizing variables only thought possible in a feature-based system, scripting is a powerful ally in making smart, robust geometry. 3 P’s of Structural Analysis

I’ve been involved in engineering simulation for 20 years. Not quite sure exactly how that happened, but none-the-less here we are. Back in 1996, when I was studying engineering, a good part of my course looked at the fundamentals of FEA for structural analysis and CFD for flow simulation. We spent an inordinate amount of time manually calculating how a five-element beam would behave. I dread to think how many trees were sacrificed at the expense of my scruffy algebra.

I learned two key things from this exercise. FEA was incredibly useful —I could get an engineering answer to a reasonably realistic problem by using this approach — and that FEA software was a must if I wanted to do this on a more meaningful model. Continue reading

Readers Choice for Top 5 ANSYS Advantage Articles

I enjoy working on every article I coordinate for ANSYS Advantage magazine. I always learn something new while assisting ANSYS customers and staff tell their stories of excellence in engineering simulation. I have no favorites as I appreciate all of the articles. But, I decided to let our readers choose their top five, based on the power of downloading. The following are the most-read articles from the four issues (three regular issues and one special issue for oil and gas) of ANSYS Advantage published last year. All these stories have one thing in common: They feature robust and reliable design practices. Drumroll please …

ACT Templates for ANSYS DesignXplorer

Application Customization Templates - ACT

Are you familiar with ANSYS ACT (Application Customization Templates)? ACT allows all sorts of great customization. You could use ACT to encapsulate APDL scripts, add new loads and boundary conditions, create custom results, or even integrate third party tools. For instance, Vanderplaats R&D  just integrated their topology optimization product into ANSYS Mechancial via ACT.

The ACT Toolkit requires a license to develop extensions, but not to use extensions created by others or provided in our ACT library. Continue reading
