Nuclear power is a key player in the future of clean energy, and multiple companies are pursuing new technologies to maximize nuclear’s contribution to the clean energy space. Founded in 2011 and based in Cambridge, MA, Transatomic Power is an advanced nuclear technology startup developing and commercializing a molten salt reactor (MSR), or a nuclear reactor whose fuel is in liquid, rather than solid, form. This technology, originally developed at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in the 1960’s, offers multiple safety and cost benefits over traditional nuclear reactors, in which the fuel is in the form of solid pellets cooled by water.
Tranatomic’s MSR design builds on the original work at ORNL and adds a few innovative new features that reduce the reactor’s size and, as a result, it’s cost – a huge factor in building new nuclear power plants. Have you ever heard the story of David and Goliath? The old tale tells of how the young David defeated the mighty giant Goliath with daring and clever methods instead of traditional ones. At ReVibe Energy, we’ve been inspired by the story.
Now, we’re not aiming to triumph over our competitors using the same means David used against Goliath, but rather to attract potential customers through innovative and agile methods. By using engineering simulation software from ANSYS we can distinguish ourselves from our competitors and offer current and prospective customers better products in a shorter amount of time.
According to Forbes magazine, 90 percent of startups fail. The ANSYS Startup Program aims to fix this. With new, worldwide startups numbering in the hundreds of thousands annually (exact numbers depend on what source you use) that seems like a lot of very disappointed entrepreneurs to me.
On the opposite side of the coin, we have all heard the now famous story of Apple being born in a garage in Cupertino, CA and growing to be one of the most valuable technology companies in the world. But did you know that Disney, Harley Davidson, Hewlett-Packard, and Yankee Candle Company also got their start in someone’s garage? ANSYS too, was a startup.
