Engineering is a pretty exciting place to be right now. There seems to be amazing news about new products and technologies being tested and released nearly every day. ANSYS 18.2 just launched and it’s packed with cool stuff. ANSYS Mechanical has a raft of new capabilities to help engineers make new technologies a reality.
I’m amazed at some of the commercial space industry achievements going on right now and of course, being a big car fan, the technology going into the automotive sector is just incredible. In order to bring these products to market, big changes are taking place in the companies designing these products.
More efforts are being put into every aspect of product design and the drive to build better products faster means increased pressure on engineers. Continue reading
ANSYS CFD is on the verge of a second renaissance in high-performance computing (HPC). The first, spanning more than a decade, has seen tremendous leaps in both the depth and breadth of HPC capabilities. Depth (or heights, rather) in the size of the scalable clusters — first 1000s, then 10K, and recently 100K core counts — and breadth of coverage across solvers, physics, post-processing, even file I/O, covered the gamut of high-performance simulations. The trend, in fact, is exponential, as evident in this chart, and spans many years of ANSYS Fluent software releases. Looking back at the past couple of years of extraordinary joint engineering projects SGI and ANSYS have undertaken, it is clear to me that when a synergetic hardware and software partnership is established you, our joint customers, are the clear beneficiary. To that end, I would like to walk you through four such examples.
The first example was outlined over a year ago in my ANSYS guest blog, “Solving the Impossible Electromagnetic Simulation with HPC” where with a “grand challenge” benchmark we jointly demonstrated that the SGI® UV platform and ANSYS HFSS software could solve very large, high frequency electromagnetics problems like cosite analysis and radar cross section (RCS) analysis, as well as allow multiple frequency sweeps to be run without running out of computer system memory. Looking back at my notes from conversations with many engineers during our recent ANSYS Convergence Conferences, I must admit that I still came across some myths and misconceptions about high-performance computing (HPC) for engineering simulation. Let me share six really striking ones with you:
- HPC is available on supercomputers only
- HPC is only useful for CFD simulations
- I don’t need HPC – my job is running fast enough
- Without internal IT support, HPC cluster adoption is undoable
- Parallel scalability is all about the same, right?
- HPC software and hardware are relative expensive
