Space, as the ultimate vantage point, is a necessary destination to connect 55 percent of the world that does not have access to the internet. With miniaturization of technologies, capabilities that until now required large satellites the size of a bus with a billion-dollar price tag are being challenged by small satellites that are 12 inches long and weigh only 9 pounds. These startup events range in benefits and sometimes target entrepreneurs working in a similar industry or technology. Some of the largest events boast the best keynote speakers, opportunity to network with the most sought after investors, and coolest venues. However, as a startup you may only be able to swing traveling to one of these events each year. Breakthrough energy innovation comes in many forms, as we at AirLoom Energy are proving with our revolutionary design of an alternative to the wind turbine. According to Forbes magazine, 90 percent of startups fail. The ANSYS Startup Program aims to fix this. With new, worldwide startups numbering in the hundreds of thousands annually (exact numbers depend on what source you use) that seems like a lot of very disappointed entrepreneurs to me.
On the opposite side of the coin, we have all heard the now famous story of Apple being born in a garage in Cupertino, CA and growing to be one of the most valuable technology companies in the world. But did you know that Disney, Harley Davidson, Hewlett-Packard, and Yankee Candle Company also got their start in someone’s garage? ANSYS too, was a startup.
